Types of Markers – A Beginners Guide

Are you a beginner wanting to try Art markers and not sure where to start with? Well, this is where you can learn about different markers available. Markers give a very illustrative and vibrant effect, unlike other mediums because of which many artists prefer using Markers. Other advantages with using markers are they dry quickly, require no prep time, easy to carry and are waterproof. Using waterproof or permanent markers reduces the time and effort to varnish a painting for its long life as we do in other mediums.

Markers can be classified depending on the ink or dye solution in three categories i.e Alcohol-based, Water-based markers and solvent-based markers. Some of the markers are brush-tipped, chisel tipped or fine tip and many a time dual tipped with a combination of two different tips.

  1. WATER - BASED MARKERS:

As the name suggests water-based markers have ink mixed with water. They are chemical-free and hence odourless. Water-based markers can be used for calligraphy, watercolour paintings using water to blend the layers on 300gsm paper. Many water-based pens are also waterproof. It takes a little longer to dry compared to other markers. But, many layers of water-based markers can damage the paper if it is less than 300 gsm. Water-based marker available are Tombow Brush PensSakura Koi Brush pen, Karin Markers, Staedtler, Winsor and Newton Watercolour Markers.

  2. ALCOHOL - BASED MARKERS:

Alcohol-based markers have a mixture of ink and alcohol and are mostly permanent. These are great for comic illustrations, design, and fashion illustrations. It dries faster than water-based ink and has a strong odour due to chemicals used. You can go on with as many layers as you want to create depth. Streaking can be avoided by using rubbing alcohol for blending or saturating that patch with layers. 3. SOLVENT - BASED MARKERS:

Solvent-based markers are waterproof but are not permanent. Ink is combined with solvents like Xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, etc in solvent-based markers. Solvent-based inks are opaque and can be used on many surfaces like wood, acetate, glass, canvas, and other porous or non-porous surfaces. These inks have a very strong odour and can cause irritation to the eyes. Solvent-based markers available are Snowman, Sakura and Art line Paint Marker.
